Secure Chat
Incentive
Listen to this question and a 1-minute answer to that:
Android
Orbot
Orbot is an app for using the Tor network that provides anonymity via "onion routing". (Don’t try to understand the Hungarian description in the picture. It’s Google translate and gibberish.)
Install Orbot.
Start Orbot.
If you clicked Check Browser, the app offers you two options. Don’t choose any of them. Just go back to Google Play.
Note the small white onion icon in the notification area.
ChatSecure
ChatSecure is a chat app that can aggregate accounts (e.g. Google, Facebook, Jabber etc), and provides secure chat using Orbot.
Install ChatSecure.
Google (optional)
If you want to use Google Talk (Hangouts) in ChatSecure, you can add your account here with one click.
Make sure you tick the Connect via Tor box.
Facebook (optional)
You can optionally add your Facebook account in ChatSecure.
Click Add Account on the left.
Swipe (notice colored dot at the bottom).
Username: annabel.tio@facebook.com
Make sure you tick the Connect via Tor box.
Actually, we could use fb’s network, but I presume all our messages would appear in fb’s chat window as [encrypted message]
. It’d be fun to try though…
Jabber
To be independent from facebook (and google), please create a Jabber account.
Click Add Account on the left once again.
Swipe twice to register a new account.
Username is a new username that you are creating your Jabber account with.
For Service domain select xmpp.jp
.
Make sure you tick the Connect via Tor box.
My username is rblst
on the xmpp.jp
server.
Note: To be more secure, we’d need to use a self-hosted service instead of a public one like xmpp.jp. I might set up a server later (just for fun, anyway).
