===== Vowels =====
There are 14 vowels. They stand in short--long pairs. Long sounds are indicated by the acute accent (stroke above the letter).

  * **a** -- as //o// in //n**o**t// (//Brit.//)
  * **á** -- as //a// in //f**a**ther// (here the accent marks not only the length, but also a different sound quality: while **a** is //back rounded// and short, **á** is //front unrounded// and long)
  * **e** -- as //e// in //l**e**t//
  * **é** -- as //a// in //s**a**y// (here the accent marks not only the length, but also a different sound quality: while **e** is //open// and short, **é** is //closed// and long)
  * **i** -- as //i// in //tr**i**p//
  * **í** -- as //ee// in //s**ee**//
  * **o** -- as //o// in //**o**n// (//Brit.//)
  * **ó** -- as //o// in //s**o**// (//Am.//)
  * **ö** -- as //ö// in German //sch**ö**n//, but shorter

Many consonants in Hungarian are the same as in English. Only a few of them are pronounced differently. Here they are:

  * **c** -- as //ts// in //i**ts**//
  * **j** -- as //y// in //**y**es//
  * **r** -- as //r// in Spanish //Ma**r**ia// (always rolled as in Spanish or Finnish, not guttural as in Dutch)
  * **s** -- as //s// in //**s**ugar//

There are 8 consonants that are two letters but one sound:
  * **cs** -- as //ch// in //**ch**ocolate//
  * **dzs** -- as //dg// in //fu**dg**e//
  * **gy** -- as //d// in //**d**uty// (//Brit.//) or //de y// in //ma**de y**our// (when pronounced fast)
  * **zs** -- as //g// in //**g**enre// or as //s// in //plea**s**ure//
  * **sz** -- as //s// in //**s**ee//
  * **ty** -- as //t// in //**t**ube// (//Brit.//)
  * **ly** -- same as **j** (used to be different, but no difference today)
